Roatán Cruise Port to West Bay: The Complete Transfer Guide

Roatán Cruise Port to West Bay: The Complete Transfer Guide

Docking in Roatán for the day? Here is exactly how to get from your cruise pier to West Bay Beach and back: which port you land at, how long the drive really takes, and how to lock in a private transfer that has you back before all-aboard.

Which cruise port are you docking at?

Roatán has two cruise terminals and they are about 20 minutes apart. Knowing yours before you sail is the single most useful thing you can do for your port day.

Mahogany Bay

Carnival, Princess and Holland America ships dock here. It sits on the south side, east of Coxen Hole, so the drive to West Bay crosses the busiest stretch of the island.

Port of Roatán (Town Center)

Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and MSC use this pier in Coxen Hole. It is the closer of the two ports to West Bay, and our Constellation Bay condos are right across from it.

How long is the drive to West Bay?

Cruise port Route Drive time
Mahogany Bay Across the island through Coxen Hole 35-45 minutes
Port of Roatán (Coxen Hole) West along the coast road 30 minutes or more

Those are real driving times, not optimistic ones. On a heavy cruise day the road through Coxen Hole backs up, so plan with the longer number and enjoy the extra beach time when it goes faster.

Choose your vehicle

Here is the part most visitors get wrong: on a cruise transfer your luggage stays on the ship. No bags means no trunk space needed, so every vehicle carries more people than it would on an airport run, and the ride costs less.

Why book ahead instead of grabbing a taxi

  • No price surprise. Roatán taxis do not use meters, so every fare is negotiated at the pier with a few thousand other passengers around you. Your transfer price is fixed before you sail.
  • A guaranteed ride back. The ride to the beach is the easy half. At 3 p.m. everyone wants to return at once, and that is when people miss the ship. Your driver is already scheduled.
  • Someone watching the clock. We know your all-aboard time and plan the day around it, with margin. You do not have to keep checking your phone.
  • There is no Uber in Roatán. Neither Uber nor Lyft operates on the island, so the app on your phone will not help you at the pier.

What to expect at West Bay

West Bay Beach, Roatán, with calm turquoise water and palm trees
West Bay Beach, about 30 to 45 minutes from either cruise pier.

West Bay is the postcard: white sand, water calm enough to wade into, and a reef wall you can snorkel straight off the beach. Beach clubs rent chairs and umbrellas, restaurants serve lunch on the sand, and the whole strip is walkable end to end in about twenty minutes.

Timing your day so you never rush

  • Allow up to an hour just to get off the ship on a busy morning.
  • 30 to 45 minutes from the pier to West Bay, each way.
  • 3 to 5 hours is the realistic window on the beach.
  • Be back at the pier 60 minutes before all-aboard, which is usually 30 to 60 minutes before the ship sails.

Do the arithmetic on a ship that docks at 8 a.m. and sails at 5 p.m. and you get a comfortable day. Do it on a short call and you will want the closer port and the earlier pickup.

Cruise port transfer FAQ

Which port will my ship use?

Check your cruise line itinerary. Carnival, Princess and Holland America normally use Mahogany Bay; Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and MSC normally use the Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole. Tell us which one and your driver will be at the right pier.

Can I walk to West Bay from the cruise port?

No. West Bay is roughly 8 miles (13 km) from the Coxen Hole pier and further from Mahogany Bay, over a hilly road with no pedestrian shoulder. You need a vehicle.

How many people fit in one vehicle?

On a cruise transfer your luggage stays on the ship, so capacity goes up: 3 in the sedan, 4 in the SUV, 6 in the Black Service SUV and up to 14 in the van. Larger groups travel in two vehicles that leave together.

How far in advance should I book?

As soon as you know your port day. Roatán can host several thousand cruise passengers at once, and the vehicles that are still free at 9 a.m. on a four-ship day are the expensive ones.

What if we run late at the beach?

Your driver knows your all-aboard time and builds the return around it with a safety margin. If you want to stay a little longer, message us and we move the pickup, as long as the ship schedule still allows it.

Is the transfer private or shared?

Always private. The vehicle is yours alone for the round trip, so you leave when you want and come back when you want. We never combine parties.
